I don’t know why only recently did people suddenly pay attention to geek girls. LA Times did a whole story about it the other day based on the nerdy ladies of television shows. And now College Humor came out with this video, which is, by the way, pretty much the how my small talk at mixers or networking events usually goes…

I’m not quite as geeky as this chick in the video here, mind you. I have girl friends who are a lot geekier than me. And there are plenty more ladies out there who will out geek me in many subjects. But all in all, I’m nerdier than average. So I guess I’m qualified to make the following statement.

I mean, helloooooo. Geek girls have ALWAYS been here.

THIS. WHOLE. TIME.

Now that the media is making being geek girl tres chic, the inevitable aftermath is coming.

That’s right, a pack of non-geek girls trying to earn some geek creds to impress boys by throwing out some adorable little nerd baits.

We all have heard them before.

“Oh, I so totally love Star Wars.”

But most of the time, they can’t tell a Wookiee from an Ewok, or if Han shot first. (HAN FUCKING SHOT FIRST!!!!! There is no other way, foo!) However, I must confess that I can tell you nothing about Episode 1-3 because they suck so bad I block it from my memory.

“The Star Trek movie was so cool.”

Of course, they are referring to the newest Star Trek movie. I agree there. But yell out “Khhhhhaaaaan!” and they’d look at you funny. They also probably can’t tell a Tribble from an Ewok. Or Sisko from Janeway, for that matter.

“I like to play video games.”

Some dance games on the Wii, or some kind of Rock Band, I’m sure. They’ll never know the beauty in the creepiness of Bioshock, the unpredictability of Rift, or the realism of Grand Turismo. I have to admit, I don’t play much games either. I get motion-sick playing first-person control and confused with all the trigger buttons. Pretty much this leaves me with a barrage of Lego games and Castle Crashers. But I do keep up with the trends so I can converse with my gamer husband and be a good game spectator. I watch Brandon and his friends play all the time.

Yeah…I like to watch. Hee.

Well, you know, and the list of nerd baits goes on.

To each, her own. I respect that. Go ahead, play your faux geek card.

But know that my fellow geek girls and I reserve the right to poke holes in your pretension, like a T-Rex testing for the weakness in the electrified fence, until you are exposed as who you really are: a regular girl.

And there is no shame in being a regular girl. Like the guy in the video said, at least there are some common grounds in pop culture reference.

To thyself be true, yo.

But if the geek world calls to you and you’d like to explore your geek girl side, come on in! Our universe is vast. And awesome.

Oh the new bunch of geek icons have made their ways into my celebrity crush fantasy land.

First up. Zach Quinto.

Okay I have to admit that originally, I didn’t think there was anything hot about him as Sylar on Heroes. But then as Heroes unfolds, his acting just makes him white hot. Especially those times he was with Elle. I mean, this scene here with her teaching him to use the electricity? HOT! Hotter than when they actually slept together. Seriously. Then again, the evil mastermind sociopath thing also works for me.

And then, Zach as the emotionally restrained Spock. When he kisses certain someone, you can see that he REALLY wants to let it all out and be emotional. He might have just let it slip for that quick, tender moment. Hot. HOT, I tell you.

Then,of course, Chris Pine. Already in love with this boy from Princess Diary 2. Beautiful, beautiful boy with eyes you can’t look away from. Seriously. I’d love to drown me in those pools. As Kirk, he adds the bad boy swagger to that and even a little bit slap-sticky humor that was totally endearing. I’m sold.

Now. Sam Worthington. Oh, my god. Gor-geous! And intense. And an Aussie. What is it with Australian guys? Sam totally steals the movie from Christian Bale (I used to love him so…) and steals the hearts of every female in the audience as Marcus Wright in Terminator Salvation. I don’t even care what James Cameron is up to with Avatar, but my butt will be in the theater seat to take in the glory of Sam on the big screen.

Yep. That’s enough drooling for today.

I almost literally slept through this week.

Coming down with some kind of sickness, I was expecting that after 2 weekends of wind, sun, and mead. I just didn’t quite expect it to hit so hard.

Wednesday morning, I woke up with a sore throat and zero energy. I called my boss and went back to sleep. I woke up for breakfast, made echinacea defense tea, and went back to sleep. I woke up to snack and shambled out to my cooking class with Aurora. (Link up soon.) I came home, watched LOST, took Tylenol PM and went to sleep. I kept checking for fever but there was none.

Thursday morning, I woke myself up with a cough, found myself still with a sore throat, zero energy, and now, no voice. I kept checking for fever but still there was none. I called my boss for another day off then called for appointment with my doctor. Strep? Flu? Whatever it is was leaving me exhausted. I shambled out to get separators put in my teeth in preparation for braces coming in 2 weeks from now. Then I schlepped over to the doctor.

Good news, not strep or flu. But sinus infection again apparently.

But she only gave me paper prescription for antibiotics in case things get worse. Let’s put some faith on my body being able to fight this thing off by itself, she said. I’ve been doing so well this year so she didn’t want to start me in on the antibiotic vicious circle again.

And now my teeth are hurting from the separators. On top of the sore throat, I also can’t really chew.

Great.

I dragged my butt to Fresh & Easy and bought chicken soup ingredients, tossed all that in the crock pot, made some more tea, and went to sleep. I woke up when Brandon got home and ate some soup. He rolled me into the car and into the theater to see Star Trek with my friend Erin. Half way blinded by all the lense flares, thoroughly entertained by the movie, and completely in bliss from seeing all my hot boys in space (Chris Pine makes Kirk adorable instead of smarmy and Zach Quinto makes Spock so fuckin’ hot it’s illogical!), Brandon rolled me back into the car and put me in bed.

Friday I got up and again shambled out to go to work. One of the bus people picked me up to carpool to work. She was leaving around 1 p.m. My boss saw my face and told me to go home with the carpool lady. I got home around 2 p.m. and slept the rest of the day, woke up to make myself some omelet–the only thing I could gnaw on with my teeth hurting–and watched Let the Right One In with Brandon. My nose started to actually clog up. I took Nyquil and went to bed around 10.

11:30 a.m. this morning, Brandon woke me up. I finally have the real “sick” feeling of snotty nose and a cough. Still no fever to speak of but I do walking around feeling like I have one. We ran some errands. And here I am, forcing myself NOT to go back to sleep. But I don’t think I can stave that off.

Sloth flu. I guess you can call it that.

A lot has happened since last weekend. But most of them captured in photos.

First, last Saturday we had the photography meet up in Lancaster with #Phototwop (@captures) for the Poppy Reserve hike and the Poppy festival. Unfortunately, we were much too late for the poppies except for a few patches on the side of the road. We still had a great picnic and a maniacal hike up a VERY windy hill.

The next day, Brandon and I and his friends hit the Renaissance Faire as civilians. Armed with our cameras, we got our Ren Faire photo bugs out of our system. So when we returned this past Saturday all dressed up we didn’t have to fumble with the damn things.

The Civilian visit, we went with 3 people. The Dressed Up visit, it was a huge group with Aurora, Justin, Olaina, Wyatt & Eli (@phraktyl & @phraklet), Annette (@dananner) and her two kids and a friend, AND Amy & Pete and the twins. We had lunch together before dispersing through the Faire at our own pace. Olaina was kind enough to take our pictures for the day. (I think Annette has some too.)

And yes, after 4 years at the Faire, I finally figured out how to not get sick of dehydration the day after. One mead, one water is the winning formula! So yes, I consumed quite a bit of mead in the past week.

And somewhere in the middle there, I went to my final cooking class (which I will add to the series soon), had dinner with a couple of newly engaged friends, and hung out with Justin & Olaina.

The busy continues starting tonight with a drag show fundraiser for my friend Greg, office potluck tomorrow, one more cooking class (not part of the original series) on Wednesday, and then spacers being put in my teeth on Thursday followed by midnight show of Star Trek.

Fun!
