I’ve read this article on the Nation online today, and I believe WE, the “modern” women, should speak out.
A question of relationships: Angry, alone and writing furiously
Apparently there are a few cases of Thai women expressing themselves Alanis Morissette style, completely uncharacteristic of traditional demure Thai women.
As a “modern” Thai woman, I’d say, IT’S ABOUT FUCKIN’ TIME!
But of course, the male dominated society, and in this case, narrow minded cheavenist pig of a columnist, has to put down women who step up and express themselves.
So, here is a plea to all my Thai and non-Thai sisters alike. Please read the above article. Pass it along to other lady friends. AND write the Nation at firstname.lastname@example.org and/or email@example.com and raise your voice on the matter.
To quote a few lines from Christina Aguilar’s girl anthem “Can’t Hold Us Down” :
So what am I not supposed to have an opinion
Should I be quiet just because I’m a woman
Call me a bitch cos I speak what’s on my mind
Guess it’s easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled
This is for my girls all around the world
Who’ve come across a man who don’t respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen, not heard
So what do we do girls?
Letting them know we’re gonna stand our ground
Lift your hands high and wave them proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will, can’t hold us down
It’s time to SHOUT, ladies!
