Blink and You Miss It

That was 2022 for me. I could go on and write about my year in review, but instead, I will channel a friend and her series of “Shit I’ve Learned Recently,” and share this year’s lessons. Life is better with cats. It has been years in the making! Brandon has grown up with cats and we wanted them for the longest time, but we weren’t able to have them because of the apartments we were in. We finally adopted the mother and daughter pair Bast and Isis in September 2021. As a first-time pet owner, it has been a lot...

Grief: A West Side Story Story

TLDR: I burst into tears during “America” number in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and it took me 30 minutes to write this and process what the hell just happened. … So, I’m watching Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and we get to “America.” Somewhere as they were dancing in the streets, tears well up in my eyes. Just as my mouth moves to ask myself, “What the hell?” The memories flood my brain.West Side Story is one of my mom’s favorite musicals. You could sometimes catch her humming “Maria” or “Tonight” out of the blue. Around 14 or 15,...

My Inner Nurse Ratched

Oh, hello blogosphere. I’m back. Recently, Brandon and I have become breakthrough COVID-19 cases. For him, it was an unvaccinated colleague who brushed off his symptoms as allergies when they went to lunch. (He thought dude’s already vaccinated except that he wasn’t.) Inevitably, as careful as I was taking care of Brandon when he became symptomatic, a week later I also became symptomatic. At the beginning of his symptoms, I stayed away and checked in on him when he was awake. I would pop in if I hear him moving around upstairs as I isolated myself to the guest room...

Processing… Please Wait

It has taken me all of 312 days to process everything I have been feeling. You know that meme question that’s been floating around social media, “What have you learned about yourself since the beginning of quarantine?” That and other things that had happened recently got me taking stock of my feelings and perception of the world.  So, I started writing, and words just came pouring out of me. Apparently, my subconscious has been giving it a LOT more thought. Functional Introvert After the first month or so, the meme was going around to check on your extroverts. And my friends...

Rereading “The Sheikh”

Welcome to the 121 days since the shelter in place order and since I’ve been working from home! I hope everyone is doing okay out there. As for our little household, we’re doing okay. But as you know, for some of us creative type, being stuck at home is driving us slowly mad. As the quote from Where’d You Go Bernadette goes: Exactly. So, I’ve sewn masks for donation. I’ve cleaned out the garage. (Also because we had “little visitors” apparently.) I’ve gotten more indoor and outdoor plants. I’ve started a weekly Instagram Live show on Mondays at 8 p.m....

High Hopes

Had to have high, high hopes for a living Didn’t know how but I always had a feeling I was gonna be that one in a million Always had high, high hopes When “High Hopes” by Panic! At the Disco came on the radio one morning on the way to work, I thought, wow, that song is definitely going on my workout/running playlist. It’s such a positive song. I even added it to my public “Office Radio” playlist which my office actually plays through the PA to motivate my coworkers. Well, former office. I didn’t know at the time that...

Beware the Young Girls

Brandon’s niece stayed with us for a week for 4th of July. This bright, tall, almost 15 years old young woman is usually quiet, but she perks up when the conversation is something she’s interested in. Like animals. (14 pets–five cats, one dog, one rabbit, five chicken, and two horses.) Or swimming. (We made a mermaid out of her this trip!) Or Harry Potter. She wants to be a vet tech someday. And see the world. I can’t wait to help her get to wherever she wants to go. It’s going to be a great destination....

Life with the Beatles

I grew up on the Beatles. When your parents were both educated in England during the 1960s mod era, those would be the records they brought home. (Well, dad did.) There were also Elvis Presley and the Carpenters, but the mainstay was usually John, Paul, George, and Ringo. My parents were so Anglophile-posh with their musical choices that I didn’t know the hippie period of the Beatles until much later on in life. That also means that I also had no idea who the Rolling Stones or David Bowie was. Elton John was introduced into the pool just enough to get us...

Everybody Hurts

I wrote this originally on June 9, a day after the death of Anthony Bourdain, all on my phone. Something I don’t usually do, but I had to get it off my chest. Entering the Anger stage of grief over here. Getting really annoyed at people talking about depression as if you have to be visibly crying and moping in public all the time, or that they should have reached out for help instead of keeping their problems to themselves. It doesn’t work that way. Depression drags you down, makes you feel worthless, useless, and unimportant so much so that...

Girl Friends, Giving, and Going Home

2017 has been quite a year for everyone. As we’re looking forward to a new year, I’d like to take a look back at this one. Year of Girl Friends Sometimes you just get so busy with your life that you lose touch with your friends. This year, the Universe has determined that I need to be reminded that I have GREAT friends, and I should be connecting with them. My friends Heather and Monica joined me for my usual OC Race series this year. They’re so much faster than me and I appreciate their waiting for my slow ass at...

Office Music Hi-“Jack”

Jack FM is our office radio as it has been since I started working here 4 years ago. It’s a great station to have for white noise: classic rock on random rotation. After all, “playing what we want,” is Jack FM’s slogan. However, when it’s the only station you listen to 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, for four years, you’d notice that it’s the same damn catalog playing in different order. We lost count of all the times Hazel would whistle the intro to “Patience,” or I would break into basic “Beat It” moves in the middle of...

Silver Fox Project

Guys, I’m going au naturel. With my hair color. You know, I’m low maintenance. I don’t really do much of anything, but I do have some beauty routines. Of all of those, the one I hate the most is spending hours at a salon to get my hair colored. I’m 40 years old. I have a house. I have something better to do with my money than coloring my hair. Well, I’m saying this now. This might just be “alternative facts” a few months down the road. We’ll just have to wait and see. Meanwhile, say hello to the Silver Fox...

You’ve Gotta Have Faith

I can’t help paying my respect to the late George Michael. But I am about to talk about faith. So it is appropriate, right? Well, people’s faith awes me. You see, I am not religious. If you ask me, I’d say I’m Buddhist. I can’t really say I’m a non-practicing Buddhist just because I don’t go to the temple. (Long story.) I am practicing Buddhism in my everyday life. I believe in karma. I try to be mindful. I seek balance and moderation. I want to treat others the way I want to be treated. I was raised in a...

Changed For Good

2016 has been ridiculously colorful, eventful, and emotional for all kinds of reasons–personally, professionally, politically. My job changed at the end of 2015, and it’s been an interesting and fun journey since then. I said goodbye to my childhood home in Thailand in March. Brandon and I moved into our first home in August. I enjoyed springtime in Scottsdale, fell in love with Chicago early summer, and grew to despise the convention/tourist side of Orlando in the fall. In June, after a few years of trying to get the ball rolling, I finally took “Be Kind For Khun Noi” from...

Castle Boren

Friends, we’ve adulted. We’ve just bought our first home. And we dub it Castle Boren. Well, I’m calling it #CastleBoren. It fits the description. 3 stories with bedroom suite on the top floor. And with just the 2 of us, having 3 bedrooms is a lot of house. Best part? 100 yards down from where we’ve been renting for 10 years. It all happened so fast. We weren’t quite expecting to buy a house this year. At all. But as those who’ve read “The Alchemist” knows, when things are meant to happen, things will happen. It started when I went...

Reading Challenge: Fahrenheit 451

Reading challenge #9: A book that was banned at some point. Note: This is NOT a book review. It’s more of a story as to why I chose the book for the challenge and my reflection after having read it. See full challenge list at the bottom of the post. This challenge is the irony to end all ironies when the book is “Farenheit 451.” F451 was not on my high school reading list, so I never read it. I came to the U.S. for my high school junior year, remember? And up to that point in my life, the...

Oakley Dokely Karaoke

I love to sing. Y’all know that. For us Asians, singing is in our blood. It doesn’t matter if you can carry a tune or not. If there’s music, by god, there will be singing. Naturally, our brothers and sisters in Japan invented karaoke. Karaoke is a community event–in a bar, in private karaoke room, or in your friend’s living room. You don’t have to be able to carry a tune to enjoy this singing activity with your friends and total strangers. Alcohol is not needed but it does make things more fun and less awkward for everyone. 😉 The...

Drink Myself Under the Table at Fillets Bangkok

I didn’t think I would find craft cocktails in Bangkok. I mean, American-style mixology and thoughtful craft cocktails; not the frou frou, tourist-trap, shaker-throwing type stuff the city hotels were known for. And I found it at Fillets on the third floor of The Portico Langsuan. (31 Soi Langsuan, Bangkok. +66 92 879 6882) Even two years ago when I was last in Bangkok, I could only find Jameson as an alternative to Johnny Walker and Gray Goose instead of Smirnoff.  And here at Fillets, sitting pretty on the shelves is a variety of bourbon, whiskey, gin, and tequila that...

The Best of Me

I’m never going to be a billionaire CEO with my picture on the cover of a magazine. I’m never going to make it on any Top 10 list. I’m never going to have millions of followers on social media. I’m never going to sing like Christina Aguilera. Okay, I’m never to sing like any professional singer anywhere. I’m never going to be instantly recognized by the public at large. I’m never going to be rich. Or famous. I don’t have that kind of drive or ambition. I don’t have that need to climb the ladder. But what I do have...

Note: This is NOT a book review. It’s more of a story as to why I chose the book for the challenge and my reflection after having read it. See full challenge list at the bottom of the post. Note 2: Profanity is about to fly around here. You’ve been warned. You know it’s a good book when it sucks you right in and makes you feel very passionately about the characters. Can you survive these “killer interview questions”?

My fellow social media professional Jeremy of Social Media Club Los Angeles posted an article about these “killer interview questions” asked by 10 CEOs. It reminded me of those weird interview questions I answered a few years back. It’s kind of fun to see what are being asked these days. You can certainly play along and leave your answers to these 9 questions in the comments. I’d love to see them! (I also post a professional version of this, more of interview tips, on LinkedIn.) As for me, well, you know, if the culture doesn’t match me from the get-go,...

Reading Challenge: The Shining

Note: This is NOT a book review. It’s more of a story as to why I chose the book for the challenge, and my reflection after having read it. You already know that one of yearly goal is to read 12 books a year. Coincidentally, my friend Naz set up a book challenge with, guess what, 12 categories. A book that intimidates you. A book you should have read in school. A book published before you were born. A book you’ve already read at least once. A book you can finish in a day. A book you previously abandoned. A...

Goodbye House

As far as I am concern, there is only one house that I can really call mine. The house in Bangkok that I grew up in. Designed by my dad, this brick town home was way ahead of its time. It’s the house that launched several other brick town homes around the city. The first town home (on the right in this picture) was share between the household kitchen and living quarter for our cook and driver on the ground floor. (Yes, we were very Downton Abbey in that sense). Princess Grandmother’s quarter was on the second floor, and dad’s...

2016: Question Everything

There have been a lot of changes in my professional life in the past few months. One of the things that came with the change was a mantra: Question everything. Why did we do what we’ve always done? Did it produce result? Why are we keep doing it other than, just keep doing it? That got me thinking about my 10 goals I set every year. It’s like I set them and forget them. And I’ve been progressively worse about them every year too. Take a look at the 2015 recap here. I’m going to do it very brief since...

I Miss This, Don’t You?

I went to grab a drink with Priscilla tonight and we reminisced how we first met. On Twitter, naturally, before we finally met face to face. We were both bloggers then. Me and my random, ranty, nerdy blog with the food spin-off that was starting to go somewhere. Then I got a job in the produce industry and the blogging stopped. Both the food side and this side. Why is it that when something you love to do as a hobby become your job, it wasn’t quite as fun any more? A quick walk down the memory lane with Priscilla...

6-Month Check Up

Hey hey party people! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Frankly, I haven’t blogged because I’m ashamed of the state of my blog. JUST LOOK AT IT!!! I know it’s been broken for quite sometime now and I have all the intentions to fix it. But I couldn’t bring myself to the computer. 10 Goals for 2015

What an interesting year 2014 has been. 2015 goals are less lofty but more personal. But first, a recap. 2014 Goals Recap: 5 out of 10 + Extra Credit Last year’s list was quite and ambitious one. Let’s start with all the fails, shall we? Fails I did not run 5K under 40 minutes at any of the 5 races I did this year. Nor did I finish reading “S”. I don’t even know where I’ve put the book at this point! I did not learn new phrases in Quenya or Klingon, which, ironically, is the opposite of the only...

Nerdvember: The Final Days

It’s kind of hard to finish off Nerdvember during Thanksgiving AND the last USC football game of the year. But I did try. Day 28: Elf from Rise of the Guardian Inspiration: Christmas tree decoration at the office! I wasn’t going to wear the same ol’ elf hat for that. 😉 Components: The beautiful, handmade shrug from Pandoras Kloset. (Same person that I got my Jayne’s arm warmers from. The dress looks AWESOME because it’s nice and snug. However, I thought about all the eating we were going to do and then I reconsidered my choice of attire.
