Linking the past

Here’s a photo of my grandfather I found online while doing a little bit of research. He’s the one saluting. And next to that, the border marker that in 1940-1942 defined the line between Thailand and Combodia. The correlation? My grandfather, General Mangkorn Phromyothi, saluted the prime minister at the time, P. Phibunsongkram during the French-Thai war of 1940. Wikipedia has a version of the full story, but essentially my grandfather kicked some French ass and got a piece of Cambodia back to our side. Hence, the removal of the markers which one is at my home and the other...

Not having a blast…

Bangkok explosions leave two dead *Update* Two more bombs exploded at Central World Plaza and Pratunam And now the tourists are getting hurt. The word on the streets is that it was either the Muslim insurgents from the south, revving up the violence and spreading it to the city. Or, a more possible scenario to me, Thaksin’s supporters stirred shit up. Either way, the typical gigantic public New Year celebrations were cancelled everywhere. Still, dad said that didn’t stop the private affairs in hotels around town. The fireworks were still going on when I spoke to him. The family is...

A Little Love Story

Thailand has an ABUNDANCE of awesome TV commercials from tear jerkers (like the ones KorBua posted) to a mini series of off-the-wall romantic comedy that actually is for a face wash. Most of them are small gems like this one. My dad has been trying to tape this commercial for me. Mainly because THESE are the white geckos I’m deadly scared of. But yep, this is damn cute. Translation: *splat* Grandpa Glasses: That’s gnarly… Uncle Mustache: I think that other one is this one’s sweetheart. Everyone: No! No! Don’t do it! DON’T DO IT! *splat* Uncle Mustache: Why…why didn’t you...

Almost Forgotten Promise

You have visited the Siamese Pixie Store, I’m sure. (If not, WHY HAVEN’T YOU!?!?) I haven’t checked in on the sales record in a while, and was thoroughly surprised to see at least a dozen items sold in the past few months! Finally, I have made my first $10 payment to Thai Redcross. Awesome! I have added the Geekzilla department back although there aren’t that many items on there just now. But the Thai Spices are selling well…especially, “My Thai last name isn’t the only thing that’s long…” That shirt is the most popular item (sold 2 of them!) so...

This week is going swell…

Good News: An unofficial translation of the interim constitution has been posted on the Nation website. No, I haven’t read it. Too early for that crap. The interim government is forming. Yippee. Bad News: Especially when you have no hot water to shower with in the morning. Well at least the entire 10 minutes I stood around, waiting and waiting and waiting… So while waiting, I heated up a kettle of water and took a sponge bath. By the time I was done, the shower still ran cold. I’m planning on taking a hip-hop dance class tonight. I think I...
